“Why is marijuana against the law? it grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?”
– Bill Hicks
If you want to see hypocrisy and ignorance piled high, the debate on Cannabis is one great place to look.
Huge numbers of people around the World use cannabis on a regular basis for both recreational and medicinal purposes. Global leaders including Obama and Cameron admit to having used it. Artists and creatives have found its cosy embrace of huge benefit in their creative processes. It takes most people into a passive, happy and generally sociable and relaxed state of mind. It can now be ingested without tobacco by way of vaporisers, cookies, cakes, ice cream, soups, breads . . . . . it has a wide range of proven medicinal benefits, and yet it remains illegal. Why? Check out the videos to the right.
In the meantime here is Jason Silva, host of National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games, to set the general framework of an informed debate.
In my personal experience of the periodic use of Cannabis and having been around a great many people over a 30 year period who use the herb I’ve rarely encountered the often reported reported problems that the media and Big Pharma propagandists would have you believe are inevitable consequences of Cannabis use i.e. paranoia, depression, anxiety and its ability to put the millions who use it on an inevitable path to addiction to Heroin and Crack Cocaine! Scare mongering nonsense that has quite obviously failed as can be easily demonstrated. Here is an example of the ridiculous rhetoric that has been part of the demonizing of Cannabis use over recent decades.
“I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb blast.”
– Governor Ronald Reagan, 1974 speech.
Of course any altered state inducing substance can and will be abused – Alcohol as one obvious example, Sugar is another, Tobacco being another, Coffee another, however this has not resulted in these and a great many other examples being made illegal, so why has Cannabis been selected for this extraordinary treatment?
Its use as a means of inducing visionary states is undoubted and can be traced back to 2,737 BCE in China from the time of the Emperor Shen Neng.
Since then cultures World-wide have embraced the herb for its conscious altering qualities, its medicinal benefits and its industrial applications in the form of Hemp. Couple of recent examples . . .
A cautionary note. While Cannabis offers a whole host of qualities as a consciousness altering substance I would stop short of recommending its use before or during the course of hypnotherapy or similar therapies. While there are undoubted benefits in its use in the personal exploration of consciousness, in clinical therapeutic work the hypnotic state requires a quality of clearly focused attention that cannabis ingestion will detract from.
It’s use in other forms, particularly its medicinal applications, should be recognised and the door opened for its wide spread decriminalisation and introduction as an important medicinal herb. Here’s a number of good reasons why.
A Treatment – Cannabis Oil
Here Rick Simpson, an internationally acknowledged legend in the use of Medicinal Cannabis Extracts is in conversation with the excellent Greg Carlwood of The Higherside Chats, discussing the incredible success Rick has had treating a wide range of conditions with Cannabis Oil including a wide range of Cancers, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative brain conditions, digestive conditions and much more to the point of making the ‘outrageous’ claim that it’s pretty much a cure all and the most important medicinal herb on the planet, a status it enjoyed for thousands of years until recent decades when the Pharmaceutical Industry and its lobbyists took control of medicating the population.
The whole fascinating and scandalous story is laid out in the following presentation. (I urge people to subscribe to Greg’s podcast for just $5 and listen to the full presentation).

In the USA and Canada where medicinal cannabis is increasingly widely available dispensaries are well aware of the varying qualities of the wide variety of strains and breed plants specifically to provide the maximum therapeutic benefit for any given condition or requirement.
Unfortunately, here in the UK, as a direct consequence of the current legal status of Cannabis, growers and dealers often have little understanding or concern for the health benefits certain strains can provide and focus purely on strength and high levels of Tetra-hydro-cannabinol (THC). While THC has a number of extraordinary properties, particularly in the treatment of a number of cancers, Cannabidiol (CBD) also plays a very important, the key here is balance.
For people trying to access cannabis for its therapeutic qualities from uninformed or uncaring growers & dealers this can be a particular problem as without specialist equipment and understanding there is no way to determine what form of Cannabis they are getting and its particular THC/CBD balance.
Legalisation of Cannabis and moving toward the North American model of dispensaries and expert advice would have enormous benefits for those people who suffer from the wide range of conditions that cannabis is known to help. It sale also raises a great deal of money in taxes!
More detail on the relative benefits of different forms of cannabis can be found here.
In the meantime the recreational use of cannabis will continue to grow and the medicinal qualities will remain shrouded in ignorance and confusion. It’s time those in authority released themselves from the vicious grip of the Pharmaceutical industry and its insatiable greed and allowed a great many people to grow their own medicinal plants and take advantage of the huge range of health benefits and to allow them to explore their consciousness with impunity as is their god given right. Progress is being made as the following report demonstrates.
“It really puzzles me to see marijuana connected with narcotics, dope and all of that stuff. It is a thousand times better than whiskey. It is an assistant and a friend.”
– Louis Armstrong
Make the most of the Indian hemp seed, and sow it everywhere
– George Washington
The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world
– Karl Sagan
Here is the critically acclaimed documentary “The Culture High” that explores the cannibis culture and all the incredible benefits that could accrue as and when people properly appreciate what this incredible plant has to offer.
